Nicky (& Steve)

Back to Adoption Case Studies

Second time adopter, Nicky, approached the family placement service when she and her husband, Steve were ready to think about finding a brother or sister for their young daughter.  Nicky and Steve had gone through a different agency for their first child and while they were researching various agencies, it was our response that impressed them.

Having phoned the family placement service for an informal chat about their options, they arranged for an initial visit with a social worker who came to their home.  As Nicky explains, “We just clicked…she understood exactly what we needed as a family and how we could prepare for adoption second time round.”

“If you are thinking about adoption, it absolutely has to be the right time for you; if you’re part of a couple, you both have to be equally committed and if you are on your own, you have to be ready to go through the process.

“The adoption process is thorough and rightly so; at times it felt really hard but that’s where the social worker and the team are so supportive.  It’s really important that you like your social worker; after all, they are helping you create your future with some big decisions about your life.

“Steve and I really wanted a family and it was a long road to get there but once we had decided adoption was for us, it was like a heavy black cloud had lifted.  And now, of course, it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to us.  Twice over.”
